When is Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries prescribed for?

  • The supplementation of insufficient secretion of progesterone in women participating in fertilization programs.
  • Recurrent miscarriage: It is advisable to begin administration of Prontogest from the very beginning of gestation with dosage of 200-400 mg per day.
  • Surgery during pregnancy: 200-400 mg a day or as otherwise medically prescribed.
  • Treatment of premenstrual syndrome, including premenstrual tension and depression.
  • Treatment of Puerperal depression.

How should you take Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries?
The dosage of Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries is 200 mg inserted into the vagina or rectal daily but can be increased to 400 mg twice daily.

When Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries shouldn't be prescribed?

  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • History of thrombo-embolic disorders

Special Information on pregnancy and lactation:
Progesterone is a natural hormone and is not expected to have adverse effects, but no evidence is available to this effect.

Special warning and precautions with Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries:

  • Progesterone is metabolized in the liver and should be used with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction.
  • Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries contains the hormone progesterone which is present in significant concentrations in women during the second half of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy.
  • This should be kept in mind when treating patients with conditions that may be hormone sensitive.
  • Unless progesterone is being used as part of the management of breast carcinoma they should not be given to patients with these conditions.
  • Progesterone should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular or renal impairment, diabetes mellitus, asthma, epilepsy, migraine or other conditions which may be aggravated by fluid retention .They should be used with care in persons with a history of mental depression.

 Possible Side effects with Prontogest Vaginal Pessaries :

  • Gastro-intestinal disturbance, acne, fluid retention or edema, mass gain, allergic skin rashes or urticaria, mental depression.
  • Breast changes including discomfort or less frequently gynaecomastia and changes in libido.
  • Alteration in liver function tests has been reported and jaundice has been reported less frequently.
  • Over dosage may produce euphoria or dysmenorrhea. (Treatment is symptomatic).
